For a marriage licensed in Memphis, start with Shelby County rather than searching by city name alone. The Shelby County Clerk handles marriage licenses and certified copies, while the Shelby County Register of Deeds provides historical marriage collections useful for locating older entries.
Use the historical collections to find an older marriage
The Register of Deeds currently lists Shelby County marriage records covering 1820–2015 and a separate marriage indexes/images collection for 1920–1989. These collections are research tools for locating an older event; they should not be treated as a current registry of everyone who is married or living in Memphis.

Shelby County says a certified copy of a marriage license can be requested at its offices or by mail. A mailed request requires a $10 check or money order, the exact date of the marriage and the full names of both parties. A recent ceremony may not be searchable until it is recorded
Shelby County explains that after the ceremony, the officiant must complete and return the Tennessee Certificate of Marriage and the specified portion of the license to the County Clerk for recording. The county states that the marriage is not recognized by Tennessee until the clerk receives the forms and enters them into the state system.
If the wedding was very recent and no record appears, confirm that the officiant returned the completed forms before assuming the license is missing.
Choose index evidence or certified proof based on the task
An archival index or image can be enough to identify the marriage for genealogy or preliminary research. A certified county copy is the stronger choice when a government agency, court, benefits administrator or name-change process requires official proof. If the marriage was licensed in another Tennessee county, use that county’s custodian rather than Shelby County simply because one party lived in Memphis.
